  • Box 1- George Hartman was a 75 year old painter who was interviewed on 3050 W Street on October 1938. He was born in Vervan Germany and came to America at 6 years of age. In 1910 he had moved to Lincoln and started up a job as a painter where he current resides now.

  • Box 1- My impressions of George Hartman were that of man that would observe the world and was afraid of most things. He was a person that got scared easily because when he was young and group of cattle walked over to where he was fishing. He climbed up a tree and waited for hours until they left so he could get down. He was observant because he said in his older age that he "lived and seen Nebraska grow". Chris C

  • This is a good example of the Great Depression because during this time period a lot of people were left out of work. African Americans had a especially had a hard time finding work because more people resented them. So they would have to live in bad living conditions such as this house and wear ripped and dirty clothes like those that people are wearing in the picture.
